How to Change Wheel Bolt Pattern

If you found a wheel for your car that has a non-compatible wheel bolt pattern, you do not have to give up on that wheel. In fact, the fix can be quite simple. By following these few steps, you can change your wheel bolt pattern using an adapter. Your car will be riding on those new wheels in no time.

Step 1: Preparation
Before starting this project, you should first be sure that there is not an easier option. Make sure the wheels you like, or ones that are acceptably similar cannot be found in your wheel bolt pattern. To do this, you need to know your pattern. This is just the number of bolts and the distance between them. You will commonly see them listed as 5 X 100 or 5/100. Once you have eliminated all options, you can begin your project. If you are willing to pay more, look for companies that do customized adaptors. Also, make sure your new wheels have the proper hub centric ring so that the wheel will be centered and the weight of the car rests properly.
Step 2: Remove Tires
Before starting with changing the wheel bolt pattern, you will first want to loosen the lug nuts that keep your wheels in place. Loosen them with your tire iron. Next lift the car with the floor jack and then lower it on to your jack stands. Do not lift the car unless you have taken the requisite safety precautions. You should be on a flat surface and use blocks or wedges for each wheel to ensure they will not move. Once you have secured the car, be sure you are placing the jack and stands in factory-approved spots so the weight is safely centered. Next, remove your wheels by taking off the lug nuts.
Step 3: Install Adapters and Wheels

Use your torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to 95 pounds per foot. Your wheel studs should not stick out past the adapter. If they do, you will need shorter studs.
Then, place your new wheel onto the studs on the adaptor. Follow the basic tightening steps and make sure the lug nuts are tightened properly. Once all four wheels are on, lower the vehicle.
